Our last sight-seeing stop on US 395 was Lee Vining, CA, for almost 3 weeks. Lee Vining is the home of Mono Lake, it is near the "famous" ski area in Mammoth Lakes, the ghost town of Bodie, and the vacation area of June Lake. And, Rt. 120 goes over Tioga Pass to Yosemite National Park. There is lots of evidence of volcanic activity, including the 600 yr old Penum Crater. Once gain, spring snows hampered our sightseeing and hiking. We shortened some hikes, couldn't do others (like the Devil' Post Pile), and almost missed out on Yosemite NP. Most passes over the mountains were closed the whole time we were in Lee Vining. Some opened here and there, but it would have increased one way travel time from 2 hours to 4, 6, or 8. We were ready to do that, but a couple of days before we left, Tioga Pass opened up at noon one day - we left for Yosemite the next day. We managed to visit and see most of what we had wanted to that day, and we had reservations in a cabin for the night for a possible finish-up visit the next day. However, the prediction was for snow the next day, so we left early in the morning and beat the snow (the pass did close later and pretty much remained closed until after we left Lee Vining - Whew!). We sure got lucky.
