Our next stop on the West coast was Cannon Beach, OR, a very nice medium-sized beach community. The claim to fame, besides the nice beach, is Haystack Rock and Puffins. We also toured a coastal drive (3 Capes), visited some nice state parks, and went to the historic town of Astoria and the Columbia River Maritime Museum there. Astoria is also where the movie "Goonies" was filmed - we inadvertently visited the town on the final day of the 30th anniversary celebration. Fort Stevens "protects" the mouth of the Columbia River, a very treacherous area to navigate, and is where a Japanese sub fired at targets on the shore during WWII.
