After Joshua Tree NP, we drove a rather short distance to Borrego Springs, CA, where California's largest state park, Anza-Borrego Desert, is located. The campground was among the best we have stayed in. The town was small, but adequate - it had a food store and a gas station big enough for the RV. There were nifty metal sculptures scattered about, and a neat slot canyon, The Slot, that got too narrow and dark for my tastes. The hike up Palm Canyon ended in a real live desert oasis with palm trees, which can suck up to 200 gallons of water per day.

The eastern end of the road that ran through the Borrego Springs was one of the worst for motorhomes that we have seen. It seemed like ocean waves were frozen into the pavement and even at 20 mph (the speed limit was 50!) we were sickenly thrown into the air. The 20 miles after that had spectacular geological scenery. The pass on the western end of town was too steep, windy, and narrow for trailers and motorhomes, although some attempt it as a shortcut to San Diego, but it did have some amazing views and it led to a town famous for apple pie, which we of course sampled. Finally, on our last day we did 2 nature trails that were right next to each other with really cool wildflowers and cacti blooming.
